School Field Trips

Field trips to the National World War I Museum are a significant part of our outreach to the educational community. More than 50,000 students – from local, national and international institutions – have visited the museum since its December 2006 grand opening. We offer a wide range of experiences:

General field trips consist of approximately 2 hours of directed, on-site activities utilizing the resources of the Museum. (Further information below.)

Targeted field trips may be crafted for those classes interested in more narrow subjects such as art, music, economics, and science.

“School at the Museum” is an exciting, creative opportunity for students to arrive before the Museum’s usual opening hour, attend a full day of classroom activities, and experience a deeper level of understanding. Our educators work with teachers to prepare lesson plans for their return to the classroom, thereby taking further advantage of this unique learning tool. This experience brings to the Museum large numbers of students (often 150 or more) for a complete five-class block of school activities. Three of the “classes” involve studying the historical collections on exhibit in the Museum at a more in-depth level. A fourth class, conducted by a museum educator, asks students to consider ways in which the public remembers and memorializes World War I. With our assistance a fifth class may be structured by the teachers in unique ways on wide ranging topics, such as math, music, art and literature. The cost for this experience is $5 per student. It includes extensive pre-visit interaction between the Educational Department and teachers.

Other educator opportunities

Meeting/classroom space: The National World War I Museum also serves as a welcoming venue and helpful resource for educational events led by partner institutions. These include college-level classes offered on-site for credit by area institutions of higher learning; teacher in-service and professional development days; teacher/principal/departmental retreats; and Teaching American History workshops.

The Museum will consider other creative ways in which educators may utilize our space and resources. More information is available through our Educational Department.
